Summer Internship at Johari
It was a big day for Sarah; my intern partner and I on the Wednesday 8th of August! As Summer Intern’s for Johari we had spent a few weeks planning and organising an event to promote Johari’s wonderful collection of handmade products. The Taste of Africa event which was held in Edinburgh city centre was well attended and the guests were truly impressed by the latest Johari clothing and jewellery collection. They also marveled at the examples of craft work and projects that children on Johari Foundation’s Miale Programmes had created during the After School activities.
The fashion show was the highlight of the evening and our lovely volunteer models presented both Johari’s popular classic items; including the much loved Kilele dresses and the latest collection recently arrived from Kenya. The African inspired prints and bold, bright colours gave the already sunny evening an enhanced African feel.
A video showing the Kenyan children who benefit from being on the Miale Programme created a touching moment for all guests. Their exuberance for life and happy smiling faces made the audience smile and helped to enforce the benefits of the support they receive from Johari Foundation’s Social Development Programmes.
Our time with Johari has given both Sarah and I a great sense of achievement as we have been able to apply what we’ve learnt in the fashion marketing class to promote a Social Enterprise and as a result help less fortunate children to have a brighter future.
We are really grateful that Ruth and Laura could offer such a precious opportunity for us to intern in this lovely company and it was a really great experience to work with Johari over the summer in Edinburgh!!
